A&E Program: Enrichment Courses

In addition to the more than 100 courses are offered at UC Santa Barbara, These courses introduce students to the breadth of academic disciplines at UCSB and provide them with a better understanding of academic life at UCSB. Students in the Academic & Enrichment Program may enroll in a college credit course linked with an enrichment course that incorporates the knowledge learned in the classroom with more practical and applied information. While students can enroll in any combination of credit and non-credit courses, some popular UCSB college-credit courses have been linked with complementary non-credit enrichment courses. Here are some examples of enrichment courses that have been paired with popular UCSB credit courses:

Advertising

• Yes But Will it Sell? – Advertising in America — How effective is advertising in shaping public opinion? Does subliminal advertising really work? Is advertising worth the investment? What makes ads work and why?Learn the keys to effective advertising as you prepare an advertising campaign for a business or non-profit organization for the Santa Barbara community.

Acting

• Acting Through Improvisation — What no script? No scenery? No need to worry. Through extensive game and role playing, using a variety of acting techniques from across the world, a short play is developed using the characters you and your peers create. The course culminates in a presentation for the entire pre-college group. No prior acting or improvisational experience necessary – attitude is much more important than aptitude.

Business

• Understanding the Stock Market and Business — Are you the next investment guru like Warren Buffet? Build a (mock) stock portfolio as big as your dreams. Learn how to pick the next big trend. See how a company "goes public", and understand the differences between the NASDAQ, American and New York Stock Exchanges. Utilize stock screens to analyze potential best buys, learn the meaning of P/E and finally build your own portfolio of penny and blue-chip stocks to track.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI)

• Forensics - CSI: Santa Barbara — Successful CSI utilizes a step-by-step process in the discovery, preservation, and collection of physical evidence. “Crime Scene Investigation” examines the techniques professionals use to collect and preserve evidence from crime scenes. Learn about crime scene management; diagramming and sketching; photography; fingerprint, trace, impression, physiological and firearms evidence; arson and explosives; and safety issues. Enrolling in both Law and Society 1 and “Crime Scene Investigation” will offer you the opportunity to see both the theoretical and a more practical aspect of the legal process in action.

Journalism

• Journalism and Reporting — This course is designed to provide an understanding of how to gather material from a variety of sources and weave it into a clear, organized, and complete news story. Students will learn how to report and write hard news, features, and profiles and will explore the differences between print and broadcast journalism. Discover if you have the news bug!

Marine Science

• Aqualogy — This exciting non-credit enrichment course brings us "hands-on" to the Pacific Ocean. Professional instructors from Ocean Adventures combine instruction in Marine Biology with chemistry, and physics. Some specific topics that will be explored are the ways surfers interact with marine life, the effect of pesticide runoff, and the science of wave breaks due to sand bars, reefs, shelf geology, tides and winds.

Painting/Drawing

• Painting and Drawing — Santa Barbara and its environs are the ideal ‘outdoor classroom' for this studio class. You will have the opportunity to learn a variety of painting and drawing techniques focusing on the fundamental of observation and the perception of space. Students' work in various media that may include pencil, charcoal, and watercolor. Emphasis is placed on each students individual artistic direction and development of technical skills. Students will be given a list of required art supplies to bring to the first class.

Photography

• Digital Photography — Want to bring your photography skills into the 21st century. Learn and master photographic techniques of composition, lighting, and digital processing. Create your own works of art using UCSB's fast computers and Adobe Photoshop to transform photos with its powerful editing capabilities. Digital camera required.

Sociology

• Relational Communication — Why is it so hard to have a relationship today? What does the opposite sex really want? Students explore the basic elements of interpersonal communication in today's society. Special attention is given to gender differences, perception, emotion, culture, listening, feedback, selfdisclosure and communication barriers. Students will be given the "tools" to improve their interpersonal skills and personal relationships. Interaction and exercises will help students get to know themselves and provide possible answers to questions asked by teens and adults for centuries.

Writing

• Imaginative Writing Workshop — What you might know as "creative writing", this is a workshop in which you will cultivate your imagination as you explore writing as art. You will experiment and collaborate as you investigate some of the writing practices of published poets, novelists, and short story writers. Participants will write pieces for inclusion in "DISCOVERIES", a student literary magazine.
• Essay Writing Workshop — You will write your way to self-discovery as you practice writing the personal essay. This workshop will prepare you for the writing of college application essays, but more importantly, it will arm you with the tools, techniques and attitudes essential to all successful writing in high school and college.

SAT or ACT Preparation

• SAT or ACT Prep Classroom Courses by The Princeton Review — Improve your summer by reducing your stress – The Princeton Review's PSAT/SAT or ACT preparation course works with the nation's premier test preparation company to maximize your scores. Choose either PSAT/SAT or ACT preparation, depending upon which test you're planning to take. Each program provides thorough instruction in all skills tested by the respective exam. A dynamic classroom environment with small class size, combined with compelling teachers, make course time productive and fun. Classes are grouped by ability and feature personal attention. Students take proctored practice exams throughout the course and receive   individualized score reports to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses. This ensures that progress is tracked and that students are ready for the real exams. Your program includes a Fall Wrap-up session that consists of an additional proctored practice test plus a three hour review session prior to the fall tests. This course combines the test preparation classroom course or small group tutoring (SAT or ACT) as described above with College Writing Smart. By tackling the most commonly asked essay questions, learn how to effectively express your ideas and create a polished essay that conveys the real you. While the focus is on writing the college essay, College Writing Smart teaches students the skills to take the stress out of any writing task. • SAT or ACT Small Group Tutoring (3 Students Maximum) by The Princeton Review (Choose preparation for either the PSAT/SAT or the ACT.) Take the structure of our classroom course, combine it with the personalization of a tutor and you get Small Group Tutoring. This program groups three students with an experienced tutor, from our most gifted teachers, in a preparation program that's built around you. As in the classroom course, students will receive thorough instruction in all skills tested by these exams. Students will also take proctored practice tests and receive personalized score reports pinpointing their strengths and weaknesses. If you learn best with personal instruction and enjoy working with a small group, Small Group Tutoring is right for you.
