1+1 Program: Student Life
College learning encompasses more than just classes. A very important component of your pre-college experience is life outside the classroom – living and learning with others. Your residence hall on the UC Santa Barbara campus is not only a place to sleep and study, but also where you will interact with students of various cultures, lifestyles and beliefs. Most importantly, it is a place to develop friendships. Summer Discovery, an outside organization, provides a wonderful staff of experienced resident counselors (RC’s) who are available to you a round the clock to ensure a smooth transition to college living.
Living Arrangements
Students live in Santa Cruz Residence Hall which is conveniently located by the Pacific Ocean. The comfortable low-rise buildings are located close to all academic and recreational facilities. Rooms are double-occupancy and feature high speed internet access, ample closet space, wall-to-wall carpeting and a set of furniture for each student, including: beds, study desks and chairs, bookcases, and dresser drawers. Phone hook-ups are available for an additional charge. Other amenities in the residence hall and on-campus include:
- Full access to the University Recreation Center, or RecCen, with weight rooms, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, and squash courts, state of the art fitness equipment, and Olympic size swimming pool
- 24 tennis courts
- University track and off-road running trails
- Three miles of beaches
- Television/DVD lounge
- Ping pong table
- Pool table
- Video games
- Multi-station computer center
- Outdoor patio area, complete with picnic tables and open lawns for sports and sun bathing
- Laundry room and
- A Summer Discovery program office, staffed day and night.
Extracurricular Activities:
Santa Barbara County is an extraordinarily lively, vibrant region whose diverse cities and communities host an almost unimaginable selection of annual and special events from parades, fairs, and festivals, to celebrations of the area ’s many unique qualities and characteristics. Other attractions are Santa Barbara beaches, the Museum of Natural History, the Historical Society Museum, the Botanic Garden, and the Old Mission. In Santa Barbara County, something wonderful is always happening.
Summer Discovery provides transportation and entrance costs to a variety of different events that occur off-campus. Special excursions included in the tuition include:
- We Love L.A. Days. Most of Los Angeles attractions are only 1-2 hours away and are a perfect way to spend the day with trips to Disneyland, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Universal Studios, Hollywood Walk of Fame and Manns Chinese Theatre, a Los Angeles Dodgers Major League Baseball Game,Hurricane Harbor Water Park.
- Stearns Wharf and Whale Watching Cruise with Snorkeling and Kayaking. Built in 1872, Stearns Wharf lets you walk 1 / 2 mile over the Pacific Ocean on California’s oldest wooden pier. From here we’ll depart on a Whale Watching Cruise. Twenty-seven different types of whales and dolphins inhabit the Santa Barbara Channel making this one of the world’s best whale watching areas. (Lunch is an additional cost.)
- Fun in the Sun Days - Santa Barbara Beaches and Parks. With Santa Barbara’s location on the California coast, it hosts some of the most beautiful beaches, parks, and hiking trails into the Santa Ynez Mountains. Goleta Beach, Leadbetter Beach, and Nojoqui Falls Park are great places to go pier fishing, have a picnic or barbeque, play sand volleyball, softball, or horseshoes, or go hiking on a trail to Nojoqui Falls.
- The Hearst Castle. No trip to the Central Coast would be complete without a visit to the world famous Hearst Castle. Built from 1919 to 1947, the estate that William R. Hearst referred to as “the ranch” is one of the most visited homes in America. This State Historical Monument of 130 rooms is a Mediterranean style estate with elaborate Italian renaissance gardens, and a collection of Spanish and Italian art work from the 15th-18th centuries. Experience California’s rich history by visiting the Hearst Castle.
- Pismo State Beach and Hummer Tours. Pismo is known for it’s pier, surf fishing, watersports, and fun 4x4 Hummer tours. Sections of the beach at the north end prohibit vehicular traffic and are ideal for sports, recreation, sun and fun.
In addition to these special events, Summer Discovery offers activities every night of the program! Whether you like sports, watching movies, or being outdoors, there will be plenty to do after studying.
