French 208SS             French for Business
A specialized training in the French Language used in business.   The course will cover usual specialized modes of communication within commercial and industrial French corporations, as well as a presentation of the specific nature of French business practices and ethos.   (4) units

French 210SS             Oral Expression and Argumentation: French for Current Affairs          
For students already fluent in French. Enrichment of vocabulary and use of idiomatic expressions through the study of contemporary social, cultural, and political issues. Includes development of oral argumentation skills through exposés, explications of texts, discussions and debates.   (4) units

French 211SS             Grammar and Composition                                   
A systematic analysis of the more complex aspects of grammar.   Intensive practice in the written application of grammar rules. (4) units

French 212SS             French Stylistics and Advanced Written Expression                                    
The course will focus on written expression, and will be supported by study of French texts and documents. (4) units

French 213SS             Comparative Stylistics of French & English
Analysis of how the tightly functional and expressive system of a national language can be transposed into another one.   (4) units

French 214SS             Advanced French Phonetics
Relation between spoken and written French (liaisona and the mute-e); anatomical and physiological bases of the French accent; phonetic transcription; pronunciation rules applying to relaxed but correct conversation, according to the results of a scientific research project; oral exercises; application of principles to the reading aloud of texts extracted from natural conversations.   The last week is devoted to poetic diction. (4) units

French 216SS             French Linguistics II: Syntax and Semantics
Emphasis is on syntax and semantics, with attention to current linguistic theories and language use.  (4) units

French 217SS             French Linguistics I: General French Linguistics
Graduate-level introduction to the major branches of linguistic analysis: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics applied to the French language. Notions of grammar, the French sound system, lexical structure and formation, speech/writing differences, semantic fields, performativity, théorie de l'énonciation.  (4) units

French 220SS             Seminar: Open Topic on Contemporary French Language
Open topic on contemporary French language.   The focus of this course will vary according to the approach selected: socio-linguistics, psycho-linguistics, semio-linguistics, cognitive-linguistics, etc. (4) units

French 221SS             Textual Analysis                                                            
A study of the literary nature of certain texts, placing them in the literary movements of their times as well as focusing on their content.   (4) units

French 222SS            Francophone Literature
Course devoted to the study of Francophone literature of different geographical areas: Canada, Quebec, Acadia, United States, Louisiana, West Indies, West Africa, North Africa, Pacific Ocean, Indochina. The area of study alternates every summer the course is offered. (4) units. The course can be repeated once provided it is the following year.

French 223SS             Novel and Character                                                
The evolution of the notion of character in the novel within the context of the main currents of thought in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The influence of scientism, behaviorism, existentialism.   (4) units

French 252SS             Fine Arts and French Society                        
Traces French fine arts and society from 1500 to 1914 and including the following: Renaissance, Early Baroque, Realism/Neo-Classicism, Revolution/Romanticism, Naturalism/Realism, Impressionism/Post-Impressionism, Romantic Symbolism/Symbolism, the Fauves, Cubism and Proto-dada. (4) units

French 253SS            French Music and Society                                                            
A survey of analysis of the outstanding contribution of French composers to instrumental and vocal music, opera, and ballet, from the Ecole de Notre-Dame to Jeune-France.   (4) units

French 254SS            French Civilization and Cultural Studies                                                
Studies of contemporary France and its institutions and their historical background. Study of French culture as manifested in the every-day life of the French society. (4) units

French 256SS            French Society and its Media                        
The course will analyze French TV, radio, newspapers, film, and advertising, and place them in the context of French society. Lectures by a professional in one of these fields.   (4) units

French 260SS            Seminar in French Culture: Open Topic
The emphasis of this course will vary. Possible topics include theater, urbanism, and societal trends.   (2-4) units

French 280SS             Seminar in French Literature: Open Topic            
The topics of the seminar will vary. Possible topics include novels, poetry, and drama from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries.   (4) units

French 596SS             Directed Reading and Research                        
Individual tutorial. Instructor usually student's major professor. Students doing initial research on the doctoral dissertation may sign up for this course.   (2-6) units

French 598SS             Master's Thesis Preparation                                                
Under the supervision of the director, third-summer students will write a thesis incorporating written works produced and approved during the previous two summers.   (2-6) units
