FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION
The UCSB Financial Aid Office uses the U-Mail system, which is UCSB's e-mail service to communicate with students. It is important that you activate your U-Mail account and access it on a regular basis as important notices from the UCSB Financial Aid Office will be sent to your U-Mail account. You can activate your account at http://www.umail.ucsb.edu. Once activated, you will need your UCSBnetID and Password to access your file. Newly admitted graduate students will not have access to the UCSBnetID and Password until they submit their online "Statement of Intent to Register" (SIR) and complete the online "Statement of Legal Residence" (SLR) form.
FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION PROCESS
Graduate Summer Language Institute participants do not need to complete a Summer Sessions Financial Aid Application on the Financial Aid website. Our office receives a participant list from the Summer Sessions Office. However, because summer 2009 is the last term in the 2008-2009 academic year for financial aid, you must have a complete financial aid file at UCSB. This includes the data from the 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and any required verification documents. For new students, the UCSB Financial Aid Office will not process your FAFSA until you are admitted by the Graduate Division. For continuing students, your initial financial aid award may reflect aid eligibility for the academic year without any mention of Summer Session aid until it is verified that your are a Summer Language Institute student.
In order to be evaluated for summer session financial aid, you must complete the following:
FINANCIAL AID AWARD ELIGIBILITY
When your eligibility has been determined, it will be posted on the Financial Aid Office web site. You will be sent an e-mail instructing you to access your file. Using your UCSB Net ID and password (the same ID and password used for your U-Mail), you will be able to access your Financial Aid Award Letter (FAAL) from our website. You will need to log on to the "My Aid Status" link and proceed to Tab 4. In order to request any or all of your loan eligibility, you will need to electronically submit the Student Loan Request Form . If you are a new borrower at UCSB, you will be prompted to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Entrance Interview.
FEDERAL DIRECT AND GRADUATE PLUS LOANS
UCSB participates in the Federal Direct Stafford Loan program.
All Direct Loans are either subsidized or unsubsidized . Under the subsidized version, the government pays the interest while students are in school. To receive a subsidized Direct Loan, you must be able to demonstrate financial need as determined by completing the FAFSA. With unsubsidized loans, students pay all the interest, although they can have the interest payments deferred until after graduation by capitalizing the interest. This adds the interest payments to the loan balance, increasing the size and cost of the loan. All students, regardless of need, are eligible for the unsubsidized Direct Loan.
Graduate students can borrow $20,500 per year, although only $8,500 of that is subsidized. There is also a $65,500 (includes amounts received as an undergraduate student) subsidized limit for graduate. For graduate students, the cumulative limit (subsidized plus unsubsidized loans) is $138,500.
Many students combine subsidized loans with unsubsidized loans to borrow the maximum amount permitted each year.
Federal legislation permits graduate students to borrow through the PLUS (Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students) Loan program. The Grad PLUS Loan allows graduate students to borrow up to the full cost of education minus other aid received.

DISBURSEMENTS
All aid will be credited to your BARC (Billing, Accounts/Receivable, Collections Office) account prior to the fee deadline if you are enrolled in at least 4 units. The aid that is credited to your BARC account will first pay charges that you owe to UCSB. If the aid on your BARC account exceeds the charges on your BARC account, you will have a credit balance and BARC will direct deposit your refund into your designated account.
It is recommended that you initiate the process of signing up for Gaucho Direct Deposit at this web address: http://www.barc.ucsb.edu/Direct_DepositV3.pdf
Gaucho Direct Deposit and Refund Checks : Refunds for credit balances on BARC accounts cannot be released any sooner than 10 days before a student's first day of classes. Students' first class dates control when their funds are disbursed. Students can monitor the progress in disbursing their summer aid by accessing their 2008-09 files through " My Aid Status" on our website and clicking on "Disbursement Information" (Tab 7).
