8A. Elementary Conversation in Italian
(2 Units)
An elementary course in conversational Italian for students who have never taken any Italian classes or have taken Italian level 1 up to level 3. The conversation will focus on terminology associated with Mediterranean Italy and the field trips included in the program. The course will include some lab work as well.
Or
109. Advanced Conversation in Italian (2 Units)
An advanced course in conversational Italian for students who have taken Italian level 4 or above. The conversation will focus on terminology associated with Mediterranean Italy and the field trips included in the program. The course will include some lab work as well.
And
189A. Italy in the Mediterranean: History, Arts and Culture (5 units)
This course taught in English will apply a Mediterranean perspective to the history, culture and arts of Italy, and in particular of the Neapolitan area, from antiquity to the present. Lectures will be combined with nearby and medium range field trips.
189B. Italy in the Mediterranean Field Course (1 unit)
Four all-day guided field trips connected to Italian 189A.
Instructor Bio: Claudio Fogu
Professor Fogu is a native Italian who was trained as a cultural historian of modern Italy and Europe at UCLA, and taught modern European History at Ohio State University, and University of Southern California. He is now an associate professor in the UCSB Department of French and Italian Studies, where he teaches courses on Mediterranean Italy, Italian cinema, theatre and politics. Professor Fogu's research has focused on modern and contemporary Italy, and, in particular, on the development of Mediterranean forms of culture and identity in the 20 th century. Although he has lived and worked in this country for twentyfive years, he has a deep and personal knowledge of the Island of Procida, and its surroundings for he has vacationed there with his family for over thirty years. He is uniquely equipped for guiding students in the study of Mediterranean Italy and the experience of Procida as a unique site of intersection in the network of social, cultural, and religeous pathways we call Mediterranean.
