Money in Mexico
- As you exit the Mexico City Airport, go to the front of the Customs area where you will see the money exchange houses. You can exchange your American dollars here for pesos at the fluctuating free market rate. Take travelers checks with you because personal U.S. checks are rarely accepted by Mexican hotels or banks. Major credit cards are accepted in many hotels, shops and restaurants. An exchange office (casa de cambios) usually gives a better rate of exchange than do stores, hotels or restaurants. Please do not carry a great deal of money, as there are many ATMs in Querétaro where you may withdraw money from your United States accounts. Be very cautious in using ATM cards in machines. If you must use an ATM machine, please use it only during the business day at large protected facilities, (preferably inside commercial establishments, rather than at a glass-enclosed, highly visible ATM machine on streets where criminals can observe financial transactions).
- Bring travelers checks, not cash. Leave a copy of the serial numbers of your travelers' checks with a friend or relative at home. Carry your copy with you in a separate place and, as you cash the checks, cross them off the list. To avoid carrying large amounts of cash, change your traveler's checks only as you need currency. Do not flash large amounts of money when paying a bill. Make sure your credit card is returned to you after each transaction.
- Use a money belt or concealed pouch for passport, cash and other valuables.
