Hotel Information: Some hotels in Selçuk (modern town of Ephesos)

All hotels offer a traditional breakfast on the premises, included in the room rate, which includes bread with jams, butter, and honey; cheese; olives; tomatoes and cucumbers; choice of tea or Nescafe; and sometimes an egg.

In Turkey, you may be refused permission to share a room with a person of the opposite sex if you cannot present a marriage license.

Most hotel baths have only showers. Exceptions noted.

Most hotel prices are given in Euros (€). Some are given in New Turkish Lira (Yeni Türk Lire, YTL). For a handy converter, see the Oanda website.

Across street from Crisler Library. All rooms have A/C and private bathroom . Pool on premises. Internet available in hotel. Lovely roof garden with nice view. Current prices not posted on website, but available on inquiry by e-mail. In 2007, rooms ranged from 30 YTL to 60 YTL for a single depending on the size of the room and whether it has a refrigerator, and 25 YTL to 50 YTL per person for double occupancy.

Next door to Crisler Library. Clean, smaller pension with lovely courtyard garden, run by friendly family. All rooms have private bathroom. Provides free transport to Ephesos, free use of bicycle, internet, and laundry service. Current prices are not posted on website, but are available on inquiry by e-mail. Website is in Turkish, but has good photos of hotel. Contact by e-mail for reservations: info@amazonpansiyon.com. In 2007, students paid $17.50 for a single room with air-conditioning.

In center of town near Post Office, 10 minutes walk to Crisler Library over Ayasoluk Hill. Free transport available to nearby locations. Pleasant roof garden offers fine view and possibility to cook simple meals. Wireless internet in lobby. All rooms have private bathroom. 14 € for single room with air-conditioning; 10 € per person for shared double room without air-conditioning.

10 minutes' walk from Crisler Library, on busy main road convenient to town center. All rooms have air-conditioning and private bathroom with large bathtub, ample hot water. Free wireless internet in lobby, reaches to rooms on the first floor (request if desired). 30 € for a single; 45 € for double occupancy (22.5 € per person) .

5 minutes' walk from Crisler Library, on main road near church of St. John. Free transport to nearby locations. All rooms have air-conditioning and private bathroom . Internet in hotel lobby. Lovely roof terrace with good view. 45 YTL single, 60 YTL double. Number one hotel in Selçuk on the Trip Advisor site, but among a small number of entries.

Kiwi Hotel: www.kiwipension.com

10-15 minutes' walk from Crisler Library, on quiet side street south of town center. Friendly, helpful staff speak English well, offer free transport to nearby locations. Wide range of rooms, all clean, some very cheap without air-conditioning, or with shared bathroom . Lovely pool in orchard some distance from pension, to which they will take you upon request. 25 € for a single with air conditioning and private bathroom , and 17 € per person for double occupancy with air conditioning and private bathroom.

For other hotels and reviews, see www.tripadvisor.com under "hotels in Selçuk." The reviews are from a small number of people who are not very familiar with Turkey, but they are recent and can be very helpful in giving you some idea of what to expect.

The many hotels that can be booked in advance from the internet will often have slightly higher rates than smaller family hotels without websites, which can be equally clean and satisfactory. The various family-run "pansyons" run about $11-14 per night. Some addresses and numbers can be found on tripadvisor.com. They can also be found once students are in Selçuk. Students are strongly advised to reserve a room by internet or telephone, but are free to continue to "shop around" once they reach Selçuk.
