Schedule/Dates

Dates of Program
The program will begin on Sunday, 24 August, at 4 pm, with a tour of the city and a welcome dinner at the Crisler Library.   You should plan to arrive in Selcuk by 2 pm to allow yourself time to get settled. Classes begin the next day, Monday 25 August, at 9 am, and will conclude on Friday, 14 September at noon, with an optional field trip on Saturday, 13 September, to the Ottoman market town of Tire and its museum of antiquities .

Site Visits
The program will also include five visits to nearby sites outside of Ephesos.   Travel to sites will be by chartered vans and will be arranged for students by the Director and her staff. The visits will usually occupy the morning through the early afternoon.   Most of the sites we will visit have pleasant restaurants for lunch and nice nearby beaches to cool off after working in the sun.

Oracle of Apollo in ClarosWednesday, 27 August : Claros , the oracular sanctuary of Apollo, has a fascinating temple with underground chambers and massive statues of Apollo, Artemis, and Leto .

Tuesday, 2 September : Priene , a beautiful hilltop Greek town shaded by pines.   The city has been fully excavated, so one can walk up and down its streets to visit its houses and sanctuaries.

Tuesday, 2 September : Didyma , a massive oracular sanctuary of Apollo, has a temple so large that it could not even be roofed over.   It is lavishly decorated with huge Medusa heads and a forest of columns.

Greek Village of SirinceWednesday, 3 September: Sirince , an old Greek town with two Byzantine churches on a grape-vine covered hillside overlooking Ephesos, has quaint houses with lovely nineteenth-century Anatolian woodwork, cobblestone streets, and pleasant restaurants and cafes on terraces with commanding views of the countryside.   The town is well known for its native lacework, local wine, and fine antiques.

Wednesday, 10 September: Izmir, ancient Smyrna .   A visit to the new excavations in the ancient marketplace, where Polycarp was martyred and new evidence of ancient Judaism and Christianity has emerged.   Afterwards we will do some sight-seeing in this lovely and thoroughly modern harbor city, the third-largest in Turkey, which boasts great fashionwear, ceramics, leather, and glassware, and first-rate restaurants and cafes along its seaside promenade.
