International Students

Summer Sessions at UC Santa Barbara offers open enrollment to all qualified domestic and international university students. For international students, studying at UCSB requires a valid I-20/F-1 visa. If you need to apply for a summer-only I-20/F-1 visa to attend the summer term, please prepare the following documentation prior to beginning the Summer Sessions application. They will be required to complete your application

  • Proof of English proficiency (see acceptable documentation below)

English Proficiency

The following exams with minimum scores can be used to document English proficiency:

  • IELTS: 6.5

  • TOEFL: 

    • Internet-based test: 80

    • Paper-based test: 550

Deadlines to Apply for a Summer-Only I-20/F-1 Visa

April 7th: Application due date if you plan on taking courses in Session A, C, D, or E.
May 19th: Application due date if you plan on taking courses in Session B, F, or G.

Note: Newly admitted international students enrolled in the Freshman Summer Start Program (FSSP) or the Transfer Summer Start Program (TSSP) should consult the OISS website for instructions.
